Composer Feature: Mari Kotskyy

This week, we spotlight the wonderful Composer Mari Kotskyy.

Mari Kotskyy is a composer and pianist, originally from Hokkaido, Japan. Her works have been performed throughout Asia, North America, and Europe. In 2008, Mari moved from Japan to New York City, where she studied composition at the Juilliard Extension School under the guidance of Conrad Cummings. She continues to study Music Composition for Film, TV, and Games at Berklee College of Music Online.  

Mari has had many  pieces recognized by highly-esteemed competitions, ensembles, and music records. Mari’s piano piece Snowfall was recognized at The Contemporary Piano 2019 international composition competition. Additionally, her piano trio  Reminiscence is included on the album “In Focus 3,” released by  RMN Classical in 2020.

Exploring works using flute, clarinet and piano, her work Colors is featured on the album “AERO,” performed by acclaimed flutist, Dieter Flury. Furthermore, her choral piece I Sing of a Maiden is included on the album “New Choral Voices, vol. 5.” The recording is sung by CORO VOLANTE choir in Cincinnati, led by maestro Brett Scott. Finally, she has been commissioned by organizations like Central Square Congregational Church and Juventas New Music Ensemble.

A piece Mari would like to spotlight is her work ‘Reminiscence,’ which will be performed at our first mainstage season concert: Studio to Stage. The work details her story of immigrating from Japan to the United States.
