Composer Feature: Jonathan Sheffer
This week, we feature Grammy-nominated composer and conductor Jonathan Sheffer!
New York born and raised, Jonathan Sheffer attended Harvard University and studied under Leonard Bernstein in addition to studies at The Juilliard Extension School and Aspen School of Music.
Sheffer has composed many film scores for notable movies, including Encino Man, Mann v. Ford, A Shallow Grave, and more. He has also conducted for the films Alien 3, Batman Forever, Batman and Robin, among others.
Some of Sheffer’s notable works include The Conference of the Birds, a children’s orchestral work premiered at the Cabrillo Festival in 2014, as well as his opera, Blood on the Dining Room Floor, which won the Richard Rogers Production Award.

As a conductor, Sheffer has worked with the San Diego Symphony, New York Opera, American Ballet Theater, and Scottish Chamber Orchestra, on top of founding the Eos Orchestra in 1995 and Red {an orchestra} in 2001.
In recent news, Sheffer released his album, Four Ten Minute Operas this past spring with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. Each opera tells a unique story from various time periods, including the American Civil War and the digital age.
