The ensemble’s annual solo program celebrates flautist Nicholas Southwick with a dynamic program of innovative works and world premieres on January 25 and 26, 2025.
Boston | Juventas New Music Ensemble announces a captivating evening of music dedicated to the artistry of flautist and Juventas core musician Nicholas Southwick. This special concert will take place on January 25 at 8:00pm at the Multicultural Arts Center, East Cambridge and on January 26 at 4:00pm at First Parish Sudbury, Sudbury, spotlighting Southwick’s extraordinary talent and his contributions to contemporary music.
Praised by the Royal Gazette for his “beautiful phrasing” and “bright and lively playing,” Southwick has been a vital force in the ensemble’s mission to champion new music and emerging voices. This concert will feature a dynamic program of innovative works that highlight the flute’s expressive power, versatility, and Southwick’s mastery of the instrument.
The concert will feature Reminiscence – Afterglow by Chein-Yu Huang and Jingzhe by Kaiyi Kai, the winning pieces from an open call for scores, selected by Southwick from hundreds of applicants from around the world. The concert also features works by Yuko Uébayashi and Maria Mandico with the world premiere of two new commissions from Soyoka Hayashi and Berklee professor Linda Chase.
“Nicholas is a true champion of new music,” says Artistic Director Oliver Caplan.“Throughout his career, he has been at the forefront of commissioning new works, and he has brought that same passion to this program. His dedication to the new music community is matched only by his incredible heart and humanity, which make him not just a gifted musician but also a wonderful friend and collaborator.”
As part of Juventas’s work to increase accessibility, the performance will also be live-streamed on YouTube, free of charge, with studio-quality audio and feeds from six video cameras. Tickets to the in-person concert are $15-35, with a $1 Music for All option, available to anyone who can’t afford Juventas’s regular prices for any reason.
